Capitol Gains
— The state attorney general’s office has recused itself from the Robert Brooks death case, instead assigning a special prosecutor in Onondaga County District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick. The AG’s office made the decision because they are already defending against civil lawsuits filed against four of the officers involved in the beating. (Times Union)
— New York’s Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus laid out their budget priorities in ‘The People’s Budget.’ Their priorities for 2025 include affordability, rental assistance, tackling homelessness, changing the tax code on estate taxes, modifying the Foundation Aid education formula, providing representation to illegal immigrants facing deportation, and criminal justice reform. One of the two GOP members of the caucus has already distanced himself from some of these proposals, most notably the access to representation one. — There is an interesting opinion piece in the Daily News today by Ryan Silverstein, in which he accuses New York Democrats of rigging the campaign finance system in their favor. He specifically points to the new potential for candidates to transfer remaining matching funds to their state committees. Definitely an interesting read even if you are in support of matching funds. — Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will join the Senate Appropriations Committee in the new congress, giving her additional power to win provisions for New Yorkers in DC. The Appropriations Committee is one of the most powerful in the Senate. (Defense Daily)
