Hall Monitors

Federal prosecutors reveal that they have uncovered “additional criminal conduct” that the mayor engaged in. They did not specifically say what conduct they were referring to, although it may be related to his ties to the Turkish government. (NY Daily News)

NYC is planning a crackdown on drivers who obscure their license plates to avoid congestion pricing and other tolls. The plans would involve fines for anyone whose license plates are unreadable because of “dirt, rust, glass or plastic coverings, [or other] substances or materials” that block them from view. The Law Department is reportedly giving briefings to different city agencies about New York’s sanctuary city laws, as they attempt to stay in compliance ahead of the Trump administration's potential crackdown on illegal immigration. The general counsels for almost all city agencies were involved. (NY Daily News)

Mayor Adams’ Charter Revision Commission is looking to make changes that support affordable housing and development. The Commission is reportedly looking at loosening the land use review process. (Gothamist)

Capitol Gains

Two NY corrections officers have admitted to beating an inmate in “the George Floyd challenge.” The attack was unprovoked. They are expected to be sentenced in February. (Rochester Democrat and Chronicle)

Activists are renewing a push to legalize assisted dying in New York State for those with terminal illnesses. They are optimistic that more could be done this term, however the bill will face strong opposition from many different groups in Albany, as it has for over a decade. (Times Union)

Gov. Kathy Hochul wants to find a path to universal childcare, and says the state will study possible ways to implement it. She is also setting aside $110 million this year for new childcare facilities. (Times Union)

Trail Mix

Trump will meet with SALT Republicans at Mar-a-Lago, demanding that reps fall in line behind his legislative agenda in exchange for eliminating or raising the SALT cap. The reps are mainly blue state Republicans, which tend to be in districts with high incomes and high taxes. (Politico)

Former New York Rep. George Santos has requested a judge delay his sentencing on fraud charges until he has had time to pay off the large number of fines he has racked up. His plan to deal with these fines? Creating more episodes of his podcast, “Pants on Fire.” Prosecutors are strongly against this, and cast doubts upon his financial situation as a whole. House reps are reportedly privately upset that AOC was selected for the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The influential committee is one of the more coveted assignments on the Hill, and members are reportedly frustrated that a more centrist pick was not made. (Politico)

Six New York Democrats supported the Laken Riley Act in the House, despite opposition from the broader Democratic Caucus. All of them aside from one were from swing districts, and some of their districts voted for Trump in 2024. Many swing state Democratic candidates took a hard line on immigration, making this vote in line with their campaign promises. (Syracuse.com)
