Hochul Announces Special Election for Senate District 22
Simcha Felder via New York State Senate

Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday that a special election will be held on Tuesday, May 20th, to fill the upcoming vacancy in New York's 22nd State Senate District. The election is necessary because the current senator, Simcha Felder, is resigning. The Governor issued the official proclamation for the election on April 10th, as required by state law.

Felder recently won election to the New York City Council, representing the 44th district. This marks a return to a position he previously held until 2010. His move to the City Council comes after 12 years serving in the State Senate.

Felder, an Orthodox Jew, draws significant support from the Orthodox Jewish communities within his district. Given his strong base and political history, his endorsement in the upcoming special election is expected to be highly influential. In his last State Senate election, Felder demonstrated broad appeal, running successfully on the Democratic, Republican, and Conservative party lines and winning with 99.1% of the vote.

In her announcement, Governor Hochul emphasized the need for representation and acknowledged Felder's service:

“To ensure residents of the 22nd District have representation in the State Senate, there will be a special election in May to fill the seat being vacated by Senator Simcha Felder,” Governor Hochul said. “Senator Felder has served in Albany for many years, and we wish him well in his next chapter. I look forward to working with his successor on the issues that matter to the people of the 22nd District."
