MAGA HATS OFF: NYC Public Advocate Slams Adams Comments on ICE

New York City Mayor Eric Adams drew sharp criticism from Public Advocate Jumaane Williams today after praising federal immigration authorities and a former Trump administration official.
During a press conference, Mayor Adams offered a "hats off" to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Tom Homan, who serves as acting ICE director under President Donald Trump.
Adams commended their approach to dealing with what he referred to as "criminal behavior," stating that it needed to be dealt with.
The comments prompted a swift and strong rebuke from NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. In a statement, Williams declared: "At least now we know the so-called 'independent' mayor’s hat is now MAGA-red by choice."
Williams also called Mayor Adams' broader comments on the city's migrant crisis a "disgrace."
“No matter what he claims, the mayor is neither a messiah nor a martyr," Williams continued in his statement. "And it is clear he is only interested in defending himself and Donald Trump, not New Yorkers. It’s up to the rest of us to stand with our neighbors – as they did in Sackets Harbor – and stand up to irresponsible, harmful leaders.”
This public condemnation is the latest development in ongoing tensions between the two city officials. Williams has been an outspoken critic of several of Mayor Adams' policies and statements, particularly regarding public safety and the handling of the influx of migrants to the city.
