New York City Mayor Eric Adams is vowing to fight a recent action by the Trump administration aimed at taking back $106 million in federal aid designated for the city's migrant crisis.

A top official from FEMA informed the city about the decision a week ago. The move involves cancelling several grants that had already been awarded to help New York manage the costs associated with sheltering and supporting newly arrived migrants.

This clawback aligns with the Trump administration's stated plans to withdraw federal funding intended to support undocumented migrants nationwide, shifting towards a policy focused on deportation.

Mayor Adams condemned the move, calling it "unlawful." In a statement, he said, "The New York City Law Department is currently determining the best legal recourse to take to ensure that this money remains in New York City, where it was allocated and belongs."

Adams emphasized that the $106 million represented the "bare minimum" New Yorkers deserved. He stressed that the funds were intended as reimbursement for money the city has already spent addressing the ongoing crisis.

The mayor has previously expressed frustration with the significant financial burden the migrant situation places on the city and has actively sought funding assistance from both state and federal governments.

Under Trump, that gravy train appears to be coming to an abrupt end.

It remains unclear at this time what specific legal options the city might have or how successful they might be in challenging the federal government's decision.
